Summary of Design Target

Scotch College is an independent Presbyterian day and boarding school for boys, located in Hawthorn, an inner-eastern suburb of Melbourne. The College raised $40m to build a new Sciences facility aimed to equip students with leading edge skills and knowledge in a variety of learning spaces. During design, the architects (Cox Architects) were on the lookout for opportunities to improve building performance using innovative building materials. A particularly challenging area was the teaching space on the roof which needed to provide both shelter and natural light.

Onyx glass technology contains an amorphous silicon (a-Si) cell, which generates energy from the sun, but also from radiant light meaning continuous production even in cloudy or shaded conditions. When Architects learnt of this product they worked closely with ETS and found it a perfect fit for the roof space learning area.

The ETS solar glass solution provides high levels of thermal resistance, while allowing 20% of natural light to penetrate the space. In addition, the solar glass generates up to 4.32 kW of clean energy to aid with building energy performance.

Solar energy generation can be monitored through an inverter display allowing students to record performance across all seasons and climatic conditions.

The Project

Finn Biogas worked with their client to build an on-site biogas plant converting manure, rumen content, fatty waste and blood into biogas which is now used to fire an on-site boiler for rendering operations.
