The Challenge

Sustratos De La Ribera is a joint venture between two of the largest slaughterhouses in Costa Rica. Historically, the red meat production plants were not utilising any of their waste.
 
Finn Biogas worked with their client on this missed opportunity to build an on-site biogas plant converting manure, rumen content, fatty waste and blood into biogas which is now used to fire an on-site boiler for rendering operations. 
 
Due to the nature of the existing operations, the biogas plant was in an unusual situation, in that no existing anaerobic bacteria for the seeding and start-up processes was available.  
 
In addition, the fatty waste and highly volatile content of some of the substrates made the start-up highly susceptible to process upset and collapse.  
 
The remote location of the plant meant that spares, modifications and equipment were both expensive and time consuming to access. Local knowledge and capacity to build biogas products were low, which also caused a challenge.


The Solution

Finn Biogas was present on site with their partners AD Solutions (Germany) to provide advice and guidance during the critical stages of plant seeding, heating and start-up of the biogas plant. Given the technical complexity of the commissioning, process critical parameters were monitored daily, and the production was increased to a steady state.   

 


In addition to seeding the digestion, the Finn Biogas team also successfully: 

  • Commissioned gas handling and piping equipment (blowers, flare, analysers, safety valves); 
  • Bump tested motor and sensors;  
  • Tuned pumping and maceration equipment.
