Summary of Business Target

The City of Fremantle has ambitious carbon reduction goals of all buildings and structures (including street lighting and stationary energy sources) within its the operational control to be net zero carbon by 2020; powered and heated by a combination of on and off site renewable energy. A major facility in the City's portfolio is the Fremantle Leisure Centre. The Centre's pool heating system needed to be upgraded providing an ideal opportunity to reduce energy consumption, cost and carbon emissions. The City began researching technology that could help achieve their goals and put the project out to tender. 

 

EvoHeat's solution 

Pool heating specialist Evoheat (part of EvoET) were successful with their bid to supply and install a water-to-water heat pump for the geothermal heating system and cogeneration system. This unique, turn key solution is the first of its kind in Australia combining cogeneration with a shallow aquifer geothermal heat pump. The result is much higher Co-efficient Of Performance (COP), superior energy efficiency and a much lower running cost.

A 350 kW EVO water-to-water heat pump was selected. This unit draws water from the Leederville aquifer 250m below the ground. The water, which exits the aquifer at around 27°C, is passed through the heat pump and then re-injected back into the aquifer via a separate injection bore. The thermal energy harvested from underground water is used to heat two of the centre’s swimming pools. A notable achievement of this system is the impressive COP of over 6.0 year round. The technology pushes the boundries and begs the question of aging pool heat pumps which typically operate at COPs between 2.5 and 3.8.

The other key component in this geothermal heating system is the cogeneration unit. Evoheat supplied and installed an EVO MiracleGen Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system that will generate 75 kW of electricity for the facility and 120 kW of heat for the pools. The cogeneration system’s Cummins gas engine will be serviced and maintained by Cummins once every two months. Its long service life means it is expected to operate for 10 to 15 years before it requires a major overhaul, according to Evoheat’s Travis McNeill.

The heat pump is also low-maintenance requiring just an annual inspection. It has a projected life expectancy of 25 years.
