From feasibility to operation, ETS orchestrated the completion of one of the largest on-site energy systems of its kind at the iconic Bulla Dairy Foods Frozen Goods facility in Colac, Victoria.

Not only did this project require us to insert 2.7MW of cogeneration into a congested 100 year old factory space, but it also required that we source equipment that had never been used in Australia before so that we could turn waste heat into Steam for use in the factory’s processes. All of this was achieved along with the expansion of the project to include a new steam infrastructure system: Modern 5MW efficient boiler, Blowdown tank, pipe work and header and Deaerator system. This coupled with the steam produced as a result of the waste heat from the gas-fired generators allowed Bulla to turn off the 50 year old inefficient steam system.
 
This project was executed throughout 2014. Independent QS of the project costs returned a very positive result. The project won the International Ice Cream Consortium’s Best Technical Business Solution for 2014. It is saving in excess of $60,000 per month currently and we are working with Bulla to further increase these savings. CO2 reductions are meeting or exceeding expectations. ETS implemented the system on time and on budget and there was no interruption to the manufacturing facilities ability to continuously produce ice cream. The project also received Consult Australia’s Highly Commended Sustainability in Design Award 2015.

The Project

Finn Biogas worked with their client to build an on-site biogas plant converting manure, rumen content, fatty waste and blood into biogas which is now used to fire an on-site boiler for rendering operations.
